When it comes to art, Costa Brava’s most popular native is Salvador Dali, whose museum draws almost as many visitors as the Prado in Madrid and the Guggenheim in Bilbao.
Located on the busy fishing village of Cadaques is the picturesque natural harbour, splendid restaurants, numerous galleries, fashion, art and craft shops, and the former home-turned-museum of world redounded Dali, situated in Port lligat Bay just to the north of the town.
Dali has an interesting home dominated by a labyrinthine cluster of fishermen’s huts, added to the original building in various stages by the artist himself over a period of 40 years.
The museum is open daily from July to September between 9am and 8pm. During the rest of the year, opening hours are from 10.30am to 5:30pm. On the other hand, Figueres also features some interesting museums, including a toy museum and a museum dedicated to the Empordà region.
The town of Banyoles having been in proximity to a Benedictine monaster, also has an old section which is full of fascinating ancient buildings and archaeological museums.
